Natural Hair Color vs. Conventional Hair Color: What's The Difference?

The fact that many people dye their hair is an open secret: around a third of women and one in ten men dye their hair regularly. What's particularly exciting is that a large proportion of them are looking for an alternative to chemical dyeing - because lifestyle and cosmetics trends indicate a strong desire to return to the effective power of nature. Holistic skin and hair care is also awakening the need for a natural alternative when it comes to coloring, one that permanently colors the hair without causing damage.

Getting started with Natural Hair Color: How does it work?

Many people, certainly including you, hold their own hair particularly sacred. So it's no wonder that there are many questions about natural hair coloring:

  • How exactly does natural hair color actually work?
  • What makes it better than a chemical alternative?
  • How can coloring strengthen and repair the hair?

The answer lies mainly in the unique effect of the pigments. Claus explains to you in our Q&A exactly where the differences between natural and synthetic hair color lie:

The structure of our hair: natural protection

To understand how different hair colors work, let's take a look at the composition of our hair, which essentially consists of three layers:

1. On the very inside lies the so-called medullary canal, which is the core of the hair and otherwise does not perform any important function.

2. On the very outside is the cuticle layer, which protects the hair from damage by overlapping cells.

3. Between the two is the fibrous layer. In it, the melanin formed in the hair root migrates up. The natural pigment accumulates and thus determines the color of the hair.

Nature has come up with a very special protective glaze for our hair to protect the pigment inside. This keeps our hair strong and healthy.

Chemical color: A strain on hair and environment

You can recognize a chemical hair color by the fact that in addition to the actual pigment, an activator is included. This makes the synthetic color alkaline: the PH value of the chemical color is between 7 and 14 - while that of our hair is 4.5 to 5.5. A drastic difference to which our hair reacts: The alkalinity opens the cuticle and the protective effect is lost. The color penetrates into the depths of the fibrous layer, where it permanently destroys and replaces the natural pigment. The previously closed, overlapping cells are now completely open. They can therefore no longer perform a protective function. By destroying the natural pigment, our hair is permanently damaged from the outside in.

In addition to the destruction of their own hair, many women notice allergic reactions on their skin caused by the synthetic dyes, fragrances and preservatives during the coloring process. In addition, contrary to the return to the effective power of nature, the chemical substances and their production are not environmentally friendly and thus not only stress hair and scalp, but also the nature that surrounds us.

False friends: Hybrid colors

Beware of hybrid colors: they are characterized by the fact that they consist largely of plant-based ingredients. Sounds good at first - but this is exactly where the pitfall shows up: you can tell by the activator, which is needed for hybrids just as it is for synthetic hair color, that they work in the same destructive way - the hair's own pigment is replaced from the inside and the hair is permanently stressed due to the lack of protective effect.

So, hybrid colors are not a true alternative to synthetic hair dyes, despite their partially natural ingredients.

Plant-based hair color has a protective effect

You can recognize natural hair color by the fact that the finely ground color powder is only mixed with warm water. This produces an initially green, smooth cream that you can apply to your hair by hand or with a brush.

Plant-based hair color not only provides permanent color and optimal coverage of graying hair, but also has a protective effect:

Unlike synthetic hair color, natural color does not open the hair cuticle - it is only very slightly swollen, so that the pigments form a natural bond with the hair's own keratin. Thus, the plant hair color wraps around each individual hair like a protective glaze, making it more voluminous and stronger as an additional protective layer. The natural pigment remains untouched and lingers undamaged in the fiber layer - so the hair is healthy from the inside out.

The extra portion of care

Beyond the protective effect, the Ayurvedic herbs of the plant hair colors unfold their magic on the scalp: as perfect care, they strengthen the hair roots and moisturize the hair. Due to their perfect, potent effect and their natural origin synthetic hair colors additionally rarely trigger allergies - they have an extremely beneficial effect on you on a holistic level. Also for the environment: plant hair colors are extremely resource-saving and, due to the lack of chemicals, an environmentally friendly alternative to synthetic hair color. ? mention?

Colors as individual as you

Plant hair colors are always red, a prejudice that stubbornly persists. But as the colorful khadi color palette shows, almost all tones can also be naturally achieved, from summery blond, intense red, multi-faceted brown tones, or mysterious black. Find the right shade for you!
